August 15th
Glorious sunshine and a cool breeze greeted us as we left the dock and made our way into Johnstone Strait. The A30's, a large family group of resident orcas, were foraging towards us spread out across the strait in search of salmon. A fantastic encounter soon followed as they passed the SV Tuan on ether side. We followed the orcas as they made their way into Blackfish Sound where we then joined by the MV Cetacea (who had also had some spectacular viewings of Steller sea lions and a bald eagle chick on the verge of fledging). The afternoon was spent listening to orca vocals via the hydrophone while observing them forage and socialize, as well as watching a couple of humpback whales (mother and calf) lunge feed through a herring ball.
