Passengers onboard the SV Tuan this morning spent much of their viewing time with a Humpback Whale in Blackfish Sound. It was the first sighting of a humpback whale in the area for quite some time and the viewing was extraordinary, especially when six or more Stellar Sea Lions arrived to seemingly play with the whale by rolling all over and around it. The humpback whale was believed to be “Twister” and was indeed observed to be twisting, rolling about, waving its pectoral fins and spyhopping which was a treat to see. A series of some 20 trumpeting calls were also heard during the encounter with the sea lions that ended abruptly when they swam off. It was wonderful observing the interaction between the two species and could be described as a “once in a lifetime viewing and priceless”. Our local waterways offer an abundance of marine life that is ever changing and always amazing, just as it was today! Other sightings today: Numerous other Stellar Sea Lions hauled out and swimming, Harbour Seals, Dall’s Porpoises, Rhinoceros Auklets, Red-necked Phalaropes +++ Pigeon Guillemots, Bald Eagles, California and Glaucous-winged Gulls.
