Fog hung low over the water as we set off on tour this morning and made our way towards Weynton Passage and Weynton Island where we encountered a small group of dall’s porpoises who were feeding and continued to feed as we sat nearby watching, observing as one porpoise fished back and forth alongside of the hull of the boat delighting everyone on board and as the fog began burning off in Johnstone Strait blue sky appeared overhead and the sun was shinning bright. We entered Blackfish Sound and as we did so we encountered a group of 8 or more stellar sea lions swimming along the Hanson Island shoreline while large flocks of seabirds were gathered close to Parsons Light where we sighted a humpback whale feeding. With the fog lifting further in Blackfish Sound a second humpback whale was sighted and it was wonderful to watch and anticipate as it surfaced and dived. Other sightings today included: several small groups of dall’s porpoises, harbour seals, rhinoceros auklets, common murre, red-necked phalaropes, california, mew and glaucous-winged gulls, bald eagles, belted kingfishers, black turnstones, fork-tailed storm-petrals and pigeon guillemots.
