It was a dolphin day today.
Our sightings today: Humpback whales, Harbour seals with pups, Pacific White-sided Dolphins, Dall’s Porpoises, Bald Eagles, Belted King Fishers, Black Oyster Catchers, Marbled Murrelets, Ancient Murrelets, Red-neck Phalaropes and Rhinoceros Auklets. On our tour this morning we were kept company by at least 150 Pacific-White-sided Dolphins and numerous Dall’s Porpoises. It is hard to not describe their behaviour anthropomorphically as they frolicked around our vessel seeming energized, playful and just as curious of us, as we were of them. It is mesmerising to watch their streamlined and delicately patterned bodies, torpedo through the water ever so gracefully, and then leap clear out of the sea with such ease.
Our resident Humpbacks were loyal as usual and delighted us with their presence. Freckles and Blackpearl were identified thanks to their ‘tell tails’ as they gathered momentum by arching their backs, raising their flukes and descending down for a deep dive. Numerous blows from other Humpbacks were sighted, thanks to the mirrored sea and little wind that enabled the blow to stay dispended in the air, long enough for us to witness their breath from a distance.
Throughout the tour we saw at least 12 Bald Eagles, including two juveniles positioned on a small rocky beach, feasting away on the remains of a salmon carcass. New birds have arrived into the area. Ancient Murrelets and Marbled Murrelets were spotted, giving us an indication that nature’s food supply is being re-stocked.
