Lucky the Humpback whale bubble-net feeding again today!

Our sightings today: Humpback whales, Harbour seals and their growing pups, Stellar sea lions, Dall's porpoises, Pacific White-sided dolphins, one Black-tailed deer, Bald Eagles, Belted Kingfishers, Black Oyster Catchers, Marbled Murrelets, Ancient Murrelets, Red-necked Phalaropes++, Rhinoceros Auklets, Cassin's Auklets, Common Murres and Great Blue Herons. Our day began with an overcast sky that quickly turned to sunshine with fluffy white clouds drifting through a beautiful blue sky and calm glassy waters were with us again today!

Our route took us slowly through a myriad of islands where we all enjoyed viewing kingfishers, eagles, herons and seals and finally, the pulse of the flooding current in Weynton Passage where we looked for Humpback whale blows. As we sat and watched a deer feeding at the shoreline on a rocky outcrop, we were surprised and delighted to see a sea-lion swimming by unperturbed by our watchful presence!

At the top end of Blackfish Sound two dolphins came racing by and stayed riding in our stern wake until we slowed. They continued heading east as we headed north crossing the Sound and came upon the Humpback whale Lucky, who just like yesterday, was observed to be bubble-net feeding! It was a fabulous viewing, one of intrigue and wonder for everyone onboard as we observed the brilliant feeding technique that Lucky has learned to perfect and use with remarkable agility enabling it to feed upon large quantities of small schooling fish, time and again.

As we headed back across the Sound we stopped awhile to enjoy watching as another Humpback whale Black Pearl, lazily made its way towards Weynton Passage. The dive sequence of a Humpback whale and the disappearing tail that marks the beginning of a deep dive is always mesmerizing to watch. Porpoises bow riding on another vessel was engaging to see and then, another Humpback Whale was sighted. How good a day it was for all of us!
