Abundant Sea under an Overcast Sky
Under an overcast sky the ocean came alive with a diverse mix of wildlife we thoroughly enjoyed while out on tour aboard the motor vessel Seasmoke.
We felt relief to have a break from both the fog and the scorching sun, because today we had neither.
The wildlife seemed to come out no matter what the weather. They are food driven and when there is an ocean rich with food, there is wildlife foraging and feeding. Some days the sea is more abundant than others.
It was a day filled with both whale and bird activity. At least three families of Orca were seen – the A30, A 42, A35 matrilineal pods were foraging in close proximity to the shore. One of the younger members was seen bringing its head above the water to take a look at its surroundings. This is known as a spyhop. It is a treasure to see an orca coming to the surface head first when the eye patch stands out so bright against the darkened sea.
The sea was like glass. It could not have been any flatter or calmer which made for easy whale spotting. Another helpful action is when a whale leaps out of the water. You can not help but notice when a 30+ ton/40+ foot in length whale breaches. This occurred numerous times today. Once particular whale breached numerous times enabling many happy guests to be successful in taking a photo.
Pigeon Guillemots bathed while Harbour seals lazed. Bald Eagles Preened and hunted while Dall’s porpoise foraged. It was full day with delightful scenes that we were all gifted to witness.
