A Brilliant Day With Fantastic Viewing Of Orcas

It was a great feeling to know that while we were sitting at the dock and readying for our tour departure this afternoon, that orcas had already been sighted in Johnstone Strait.

And so, on that happy note and with all of our passengers smiling, we left the dock and made our way East in Johnstone Strait where we encountered five Bigg’s (Transient Orcas) at the Sophia Islands. By their relaxed manner and slow moving pace, we had to wonder had they been feasting on prey earlier ahead of our arrival. We have not encountered Biggs often on our tours this summer and so it was quite a treat to spend the time that we did observing them being so relaxed and unhurried in their movements.

We left the orcas just below ‘Eagle Eye’ and entered Blackfish Sound where at the top end, nearing the Plumper Islands we saw the dark outline of a Humpback whale surfacing. We enjoyed some wonderful time watching while it foraged back and forth and witnessed lunge feeding at one point much to our passengers amazement. The sight and sound of such a spectacle is something not easily forgotten! Another Humpback was also seen breaching a distance away and we also had some great viewing of Dall’s Porpoises, Harbour Seals, Stellar Sea Lions, Common Murres and Bald Eagles.

The weather, still maintaining a beautiful run of clear sunny days with blue skies and sparkling blue waters made today an especially unforgettably beautiful one and our passengers on return to the dock were all still smiling.
