Stellar Entertainment!

The MV Seasmoke left the Alert Bay dock under sunny skies with just a hint of mist around the edges. Passengers travelled on calm waters enjoying a slight breeze from the Northwest. After picking up more guests at the Alder Bay Resort, our skipper set off to take all aboard on a trip into spectacular local waters, that teem with maritime activity.

Our guests told us they ‘couldn’t have had more fun’ than they did out on the water today. There was a lot of feeding activity: five to eight Bald eagles were busy diving for fish in a bait ball, right in the middle of a group of Rhinoceros Auklet in Blackfish Sound. Other birds sighted were the Pigeon Guillemot, identified by their characteristic black feathers with white markings on the wings, and orange feet.

Then more excitement with Stellar sea lions feeding on fish in front of Orcalab on Hanson Island. To top this off, a Humpback in the same vicinity breached right in front of onlookers! More Humpbacks were sighted in White Beach Passage, and delighted passengers with a beautiful full fluke while taking a long dive.

Dall’s porpoises, so swift and fun to watch, were seen in Weynton Passage, and Harbour seals with their pups lingered on the rocks of the Stephanson Islands.

Guests on board felt they had seen every creature it was possible to see out in these pristine waters today. What joy to see nature’s abundance first hand and what a privilege to watch birds and mammals in their natural habitat.
