Summer Fun On the Water
What a spectacular day to be out on the water! Guests departed Alert Bay under flat, calm conditions with no discernible breeze and under bright blue sunny skies. Our skipper, Jon picked up additional passengers at Alder Bay Resort on Vancouver Island and guests were off on their afternoon adventure!
Dall’s Porpoise were seen everywhere the Seasmoke ventured today; in Weynton Passage, Blackfish Sound and in around the many small islands that dot this coastal area. These small black and white mammals are fun to watch as they pop quickly up for a breath then just as quickly down, and often will ‘play’ with a boat making waves.
A Humpback was spotted at Flower Island making its way to Bold Head. Because they are not in a hurry, we can sit still in the boat and watch these whales from a safe distance as they come up for air, making their shallow dives. Passengers love to see that magnificent fin appear up in the air as a Humpback makes a deep dive, not appearing again for several minutes. Another Humpback was observed foraging in front of Orca Lab in Blackfish Sound.
Many Harbour seals were seen with their cute pups today, lounging in the kelp beds and on the rocks on this lovely day. In the Stephanson Islands, many waterfowl were swimming about - the Red Necked Phalarope, Pigeon Guillemot and Black Oystercatcher. The Common Murre and Rhinoceros Auklet were also out today. Two bald eagles rested in their large nest located in the Stephansons, where an eaglet was born recently that has matured into a brown juvenile.
A stellar day in a spectacular region that plays host to so many of natures wonders. On a calm day like today, the views of trees, rock and mountain reflected in the serene water are unparalleled!
