Wind on the Water

David Crosby and Graham Nash released an album in 1975 entitled ‘Wind on the Water’ which is also the theme of an important song on the album, ‘Ode to the Last Whale’. Fortunately, we are not seeing the last of the whales out in our waters, but there certainly was wind today, later in the morning.

The MV Seasmoke left the Alert Bay dock this morning under calm conditions and sunny skies and was able to cruise to Blackfish Sound to catch sight of Humpbacks, that have been returning in numbers to our region in the last seven to eight years. Not only that, rather than head north as they used to, these large beauties now stay in our region to feed on small fish, filtered through their baleen. Passengers witnessed that deep dive they make to show off their magnificent flukes.

The juvenile Bald eagle we’ve been watching was back next to its nest today, although it is evident now that this youngster with the mottled brown feathers has learned how to fly. Harbour seals were out in the Stephansons, lolling on the rocks, and a young female deer was spotted foraging for bits of moss and lichen on islets as well.

Our skipper kept to the sheltered waters of the Plumper Islands which are not only very pretty but are home to a variety of sea birds and mammals. Our guests enjoyed the scenic splendour that we are so fortunate to be close to when out on the water.
