The Best Whale Show Yet!

The MV Seasmoke departed Alert Bay dock under a bit of wind and slightly choppy waters to head to Alder Bay Resort where seven more folks waited to board the boat. The sun peaked out here and there through the clouds but even the worse weather could not have dampened the spirits of our passengers today.

Our skipper Jon said that the whales were all grouped together, and the Stellar sea lions ‘were in with everyone else’ and you would have thought there was some sort of party, with all the sea mammals in virtually one place.

The same ‘I’ pod that has been in local waters for the past few days were out in numbers - about 12-14 of them, at the top of the Plumper Islands where six Humpbacks also gathered. So much to look at, all at once! The Humpbacks were spread out in Blackfish Sound from Stubbs Island to the Plumpers and our boat stood still so that passengers could observe their shallow diving. Always such a wonderful sight when they take that last deep dive and show off their magnificent fluke.

Youngsters on board were happy to see the Harbour seals taking it easy on the islands of the Stephanson group of islands where the waters are sheltered from the wind and waves and were excited about seeing a Bald eagle high up near its nest.

This has been a spectacular whale watching season and it is so rewarding to see the happy faces returning from a tour, delighted with all the sights out there in the wild, and the opportunity to see the wonderful sea mammals that live in our area in their natural habitat.
