Calm, Tranquil and Wildlife Rich
Over the last two days there were hints of summer still in the air as the clouds parted, bringing back the sun and an infinite blue sky. Our guests were grateful from the respite of the rain and expressed their eagerness and excitement to be setting off on an adventure with skipper Jon aboard MV Seasmoke.
The seas were like glass and made for easy travel as we explored the picturesque Stephenson Islands. On all the rocks that were exposed above the tide were littered with Harbour seals that lazed and dazed the afternoon away. On the very same rocks Cormorants stood alert, drying wings and taking a break from fishing, and above them, poised in great cedars, Bald Eagles; the king and queens of the trees were on the lookout for prey.
It was feeding time in Blackfish Sound. Thousands of Sooty Shearwaters gathered and feasted on the silvery fish that swam just beneath the surface of the sea. Nearby numerous Humpbacks gave a spectacular show as they lunged at schools of herring, as they fed to their hearts content. These large 50 foot long, 30 ton marine mammals displayed trap and lunge feeding, aswell they tail slapped at the surface, all to assist with their afternoon snack time.
The soft-grey colouration of the sea and sky joined together as the two hazy atmosphere’s merged into one. The mountains in the background, as layered as they are high, stood like anonymous guardians, watching over the spectacular display of wildlife, feasting on the jewels of the sea.
Our guests, made up of visitors and locals, came back thrilled with their experience, having explored the beautiful backyard of Northern Vancouver Island, the place we are so lucky to call home.
