SAIL WITH THE WHALES – WILDLIFE UPDATE July 1, 2008
Happy Canada Day

The SV Tuan cruised up Johnson Strait. The moody morning fog lifted and the sunlight reflected upon the ocean water. I cupped a warm coffee as we quietly explored the Pearse Islands listening to the calls of bald headed eagles. Not far from Hanson Island five Dall’s porpoises playfully swam towards us and started bow riding. Fresh baked muffins brought hungry hands together to sit and chat. The boat sailed on. That was when we heard the sound of our first humpback. Two humpbacks surfaced about 100 meters behind us. They must have been bigger than the boat. The sea was alive with small whirl pools as the tide shifted. Sea birds dove in and around the swirling currents. Five white sided dolphins were feeding within the bubbling broth. An unexpected humpback surfaced and approached our vessel. What a treat watching its massive body move above and below water. The Tuan slowly turned and began its journey home. What a wonderful way to celebrate Canada Day.
