When we headed out this afternoon change came today in the shape and form of se winds in Johnstone Strait. It had been reported that a group of orcas were heading to the west opposite the Robson Bight Ecological Reserve and so we headed in that direction along the Hanson Island side and encountered them nearing Cracroft Point. Here a small group of orcas were foraging in Blackney Passage while others were opposite on the Vancouver Island side. We believe that they were some of the I15’s, but identification of them was not easy due to wind and wave action. Several Pacific White-sided Dolphins were swimming among the orcas and this no doubt accounted for some long dives that were taken by the orcas. We journeyed home via Blackfish Sound where in contrast to Johnstone Strait, the sea was calm and the sun shining. On our way, we again briefly viewed Stellar Sea Lions where earlier on in the tour there had been some 80 + observed hauled out with many more in the water fishing. They are always fascinating to watch and photograph. Other species also seen today were: Harbour Seals, Bald Eagles, Rhinoceros Auklets, Common Murres, Red-necked Phalaropes, California, Glaucous-winged & Herring Gulls.
