The fog that hung low this morning lifted very quickly and once we were underway we had good visibility down Johnstone Strait and out through Weynton Passage. The orcas who were at the rubbing beaches in the early hours this morning were reported far to the east at Camp Point near Kelsy Bay shortly after we left the dock and so we headed out through Weyton Passage to look for humpback whales. En route we sighted stellar sea lions and as we observed them we counted one group of 40 + and another group of 10+ , this is the largest number of sea lions that we have encountered so far this summer. A humpback whale was sighted a distance away off one of the Plumper Islands in Blackfish Sound and suddenly it surfaced beside us, taking everyone by surprise, especially those on board who had never seen a humpback whale before. Another humpback whale was sighted crossing Blackfish Sound, it turned out to be KC and our passengers enjoyed watching and photographing it, especially when it fluked. The day was a beautiful warm one, the scenery breathtaking especially watching as fog patches lifted revealing islands and the Coast Range Mountains. Other sightings included: dalls porpoises, harbour seals++, rhinoceros auklets, common murres+++, herring, california and mew gulls, a pacific loon, belted kingfishers and bald eagles.
