Our sightings today of resident orcas were of the A30, A23 and A25 matrilines and our first encounter was near to Kaikash Beach where we enjoyed wonderful viewing of A54 and her off-spring including A75’s new calf as they foraged close along the Vancouver Island shoreline and as they went by we listened to their A-Clan calls via our hydrophone. Behind them came the A23 and A25 matrilines, six orcas in a resting line moving slowly towards mid-Strait with A39 foraging around them. The rest of the A30’s (A30, A38 and A50’s) were parallel to the A54’s but across the Strait foraging and when they all turned back to the east, A38, who had been foraging the furtherest west off the bottom of Hanson Island in the flood current, could be seen following the rest of his family back to the east. We travelled up into Weynton Passage where two humpback whales were observed to be feeding in the current and eight or more stellar sea lions could be seen swimming along the shoreline. Large gatherings of sea birds were sighted at both Blackney Pass and Weynton Passage today with active herring ball activity and birds feeding in the flood currents. Other sightings today included: dall’s porpoises, harbour seals, two pacific-white-sided dolphins, rhinoceros auklets, common murre, red-necked phalaropes, california, mew and glaucous-winged gulls, bald eagles and a newly fledged eaglet, belted kingfishers and pigeon guillemots.
