An Excellent Viewing of Breaching Orcas!

Our sightings today: Biggs Killer Whales (Transients), Humpback whales, Harbour seals, Dalls Porposies, Bald Eagles, Belted King Fishers, Black Oyster Catchers, Cassin’s Auklets, Red-neck Phalaropes, Rhinoceros Auklets and Black tailed deer. Our tour today presented our overseas guests an opportunity to witness nature at its finest. Not only was the weather kind to us offering smooth seas and brightness, despite the overcast conditions, the animals came out of the woodwork. A pod of approximately 6 Orca was seen today and identified as T39’s. Not only did we see their vibrant black and white bodies surfacing from the calm sea and their breath rising like a steam whistle, we saw them jump clearly out of the water, a full breach. We made sure to lower our hydrophone and were privileged to listen in to the underwater world and hear the calls coming from the Orca who traveled by us.

Let us also not forget to mention our resident Humpbacks. Argonaut was seen today around Stubbs Island and while our engines were shut off, our guests delighted in hearing the sound of their breath as they emptied their lungs of air then filling them up again, all in one surface.

Over the past few days the Red-neck Phalaropes have been seen in the hundreds, utilizing the nutrient rich food offered by the sea. Two black-tailed deer were sighted foraging along the shore of one of the small islets as our vessel cruised through narrow passages, providing a visual feast for our eager eyes.
