A feeding frenzy of Humpback whales, dolphins, sea birds and more!
Sightings: Resident Orcas, Humpback whales, Pacific White-sided dolphins, Harbour seals, 2 Black-tailed deer, Bald Eagles, Belted Kingfishers, Red-necked Phalaropes, Rhinoceros Auklets, Cassin's Auklets, Common Murres, White-winged Scoters and Great Blue Herons. How incredible was the day despite the rain with so much to see and hear! It began with a sighting of 150 + dolphins who were travelling back and forth with some of them bow-riding. Following this amazing encounter we found three Humpback whales milling and drifting in the current off Bold Head. Resident Orcas, the A30's were reported travelling east from Lizard Point and we observed their movement while listening to their beautiful A-clan calls via the hydrophone. It was an amazing experience for everyone on board but especially for those who had never heard orcas vocalizing before!
On the afternoon tour we encountered the A30's in a resting line off Cracroft Point travelling slowly towards the Robson Bight Ecological Reserve. It was at Bold Head that we again encountered Humpback whales and this time we were treated to some amazing sights as four Humpbacks had gathered together and were seen trap and lunge feeding. It was an incredible viewing as the whales were trumpeting excitedly surrounded by 100+ dolphins who were in the mix of the feeding frenzy!
