Lucky bubble-net feeding again!

Our sightings today: Humpback whales, Harbour seals, Dall's Porpoises, Stellar Sea Lion, Bald Eagles, Belted Kingfishers, Black Oyster Catchers, Black Turnstones, Red Necked Phalaropes, Rhinoceros Auklets, Cassins Auklets, Common Murres and a Black-tailed deer. It was a sun-filled day out on the water for both of our tours today.  In the morning there was evidence of light fog but the warmth from the sun burned that off and soon enough, a blue sea blended into a blue sky making for vibrant colours all around.

Numerous whale blows were seen lingering in the distance due to the stillness of the air. Lucky, Conger and Argonaut were the three whales that we observed at a range close enough to identify. Their broad dark-grey backs sliced through the water as they surfaced in search of food. We enjoyed watching Lucky bubble net feeding especially when the jaw appeared above the ocean surface, wide-open and eagerly feasting on the food from the sea.

Bald Eagles were prominent today, perched proudly on cedar branches in close range of their nest, keeping an eagle eye on their young. The eaglets still donned in dark brown down are becoming rather hefty, getting fattened up by both parents in preparation for them to soon fledge.

It was a stunning blue-bird day on Northern Vancouver Island and in the friendly village of Alert Bay.
