Humpback Whales and Porpoises!

July 5th

It is hard to believe how beautifully sunny it was during our two tours today. Shortly after, as our guests walked back to our Alert Bay office in the late afternoon, it started raining hard, and moody storm clouds had enveloped the peaks of our nearby hills and mountains.

We heard thunder towards the end of our last tour and couldn't help but wonder if this sudden change in weather kept the Bald Eagles away as few were seen. Wildlife knows the weather is changing before we do that is for sure.

Two species of porpoises were seen today, the Dall's and Harbour as well as Humpback Whales. During one tour a mother Humpback whale and her calf were seen together, so it was fabulous to know that this pair was in the area.  With our engines off our boat drifted silently and we sat and observed a single whale that had surfaced nearby, meanwhile blows from other Humpback whales could be seen in the distance.

Out in Blackfish Sound wind threatened, and we saw that waves had begun to form on the vast expanse of water. These are the days we appreciate the sheltered, narrow passageways formed by our numerous islands and islets that make up this beautiful archipelago.
It was a delightful day with curious animals and guests from all over the world.
