A gift of calm seas, brilliant sunshine and an Rich array of Wildlife encounters - July 16th
It was a scorching hot summer day in Alert Bay, but out on the water we were gifted by a cool breeze from the sparkling blue ocean. The clear skies and calmness of the sea made it easy to scan the horizon and look for whale blows as well as any other marine life that broke the surface of the sea.
Only twenty minutes into our tour a pod of orcas travelling tightly together were sighted. They were steadily travelling in an Easterly direction and eventually made it into Johnstone Strait. They were identified as the A23’s. A60 with his six-foot dorsal fin is more easily recognised because of the large nick on his dorsal fin while the smaller, more curved and dolphin-like fins belonged to the females and one young male.
After spending some time with this family group, we moved on in search of a Humpback whale. We sighted one and enjoyed watching when its fluke descended below the ocean.
We continued our adventure when a feeding frenzy made up of mostly gulls caught our attention. Amongst this scene were two or more Stellar sea lions. One had captured a fish which it slapped about creating a considerable confusion on the water. Diving gulls and a feasting Sea Lion added to the array of memorable encounters we experienced on our tour.
