The Wonders of the Wild

Numerous Humpback whales spread from Malcolm Island across Blackfish Sound to Swanson Island, was one of the highlights of our trip today with Seasmoke Whale Watching. We spent several moments in quiet contemplation in the company of huge marine mammals which moved slowly as they surfaced four to five times, exhaling air before receiving new breath. They filled their immense lungs and then arched forward; head down, descending into a deep dive where their curved and powerful fluke rose high.

Even though we were focused on these moments with the Humpbacks, a wide variety of other animals also deserved our complete attention. A Harbour Seal investigated our boat from a distance. Its long, sensitive whiskers, big eyes and shiny head, discreetly watched us, always alert of its surroundings. This individual was silent, lifting its nose ever so slightly then submerged elegantly in the waters below.

A Moon Jelly moved close the to the surface, right next to our boat, This invertebrate uses its tentacles to catch prey, all the while we waited for our next whale blow.

A group of Cormorants and Gulls entertained us while they perched on a drifting log, which floated by in the current; a natural transport to rest, socialize and look for prey.

Bald Eagles flew close to the surface, sharing the “air rights” with other Gulls while they searched for the next bait ball. These big concentration of small schooling fish are at the mercy of so many species which forage on the juvenile Herring in these waters.

Today we were blessed with the company of Resident Killer whales and Pacific White-sided dolphins. These two marine mammals foraged in the same area, and at one stage we witnessed how reluctant the Orca's were having to spend time with these energetic dolphins who frolicked, lunged and leaped in somewhat appeared to be spontaneous play.

On our way home we relaxed under the warm rays of the sun. Dall’s porpoise were seen from a distance, as they traveled West with a purpose. As we see beautiful Alert Bay getting closer, our minds reflect on the adventure we just had in the company of splendid wildlife in this stunning Northern Vancouver Island region.
