Hustle and Bustle in Alert Bay and Out on the Water - Aug 4th
The town of Alert Bay was filled with hustle and bustle as participants for the ‘Alert Bay 360’ were arriving with colourful kayaks secured to their vehicle roof tops. The campground was filled to the brim and the buzz in town throughout the hot summer day was infectious.
It seemed it was the same out on the water. We had a full day, consisting of three tours and every time our guests arrived back from adventuring in this region on board the MV Seasmoke, they had different stories to share.
The first tour had at least a hundred dolphins leaping and cork screwing in the air, bow and wake riding, zipping and dashing around our boat. Orcas were tucked deep inside Robson Bight on the first tour but came out from the protected boundary for the last two tours of the day.
Orcas were breaching and spy hopping as they journeyed along the coast and vocalized with eachother utilizing their unique dialect. As we drifted in silence, we were able to hear their synchronized breath which brought such welcomed peace to our group who listened intently.
Feeding frenzies were full on today and the gulls took part by the hundreds. There seemed to be a tight bait ball, an offering for many beaks to feed. Dall’s porpoise was seen on every tour along with our magnificent Humpbacks whose broad tail fluke excited our guests as it rose up during their deep dives. How incredibly magnified the Humpbacks size and sound of blow are compared to the Orca. And such a treasure to witness such different species sharing in the same vicinity of the sea cohesively.
