From Bears to Baleen Whales

Today aboard the MV Seasmoke guests had a real treat when we spotted a black bear and her two cubs on the beach! We watched as they lumbered along the coastline before disappearing out of sight. Both tours had sightings of humpack as they foraged for food. Stellar sea lions also made an appearance in among the humpbacks.

Harbour seals enjoyed the sunshine from their perch on the Stephenson Islands. Dall’s porpoises also made an appearance, bow riding for us this afternoon, much to everyone’s delight. In the morning, we saw about eight Bigg’s (transient) orca as they travelled quickly past us. This afternoon, we saw northern resident orca (the I4s and A50s) in Blackfish Sound.

A bald eagle amazed us with its size and strength as it flew by us. Sea birds, including common murre, pigeon guillemot, red-necked phalarope, and rhinoceros auklet were seen in abundance. Overall, it was a day that delighted passengers and crew alike!
