Change is blowing in the air
Change was blowing our way today, with the cool wind steadily increasing as the day progressed. At times, the sunbeams streamed through dramatic cloud cover, and the skies were almost pink against the blues of the mountains. Today, our tours both experienced that indescribable feeling of the calm before a storm. It’s almost as if nature is holding its breath, and everything feels still even as the wind begins to tell a different story.
After scouting the waters for signs of orca and humpback, our highlight of the morning tour was witnessing some awesome humpback activity, We were amazed as 8-10 humpbacks all around us were surfacing and feeding. The birds were also feasting! Both birds and whales seemed to be having the time of their lives, and we even saw humpback breaching. One deeply impacted passenger shared that she couldn’t stop her hands from shaking when she was taking pictures and that she even felt a tear run down her cheek. These are the special moments that we at Seasmoke are so grateful to be able to provide for our guests.
Our afternoon tour also experienced beautiful moments with the humpback whales. By the afternoon, there were even more of them (by some counts, up to 18!) displaying interesting behaviors such as tail slapping. Guests were thrilled to see these gentle ocean giants feeding and playing together, all in the vicinity of our boat.
A huge treat today was seeing a minke whale. Sightings of these beautiful whales are rare for us, and we are always so happy when we spot one! Other special mentions today go out to the Stellar sea lions, harbour seals, and even black-tailed deer on the shore. Bald eagles and a wide variety of sea birds were also seen in abundance. What an awesome place for Seasmoke to call home, so close to all this action and beauty.
