Seasmoke is back - our first trip of the 2020 season

It was a beautiful day and for us, it was also our first tour of the season.

We had a cheerful family group onboard and all of them were excited to be venturing out this morning on the calm flowing waters on which we toured in Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound. While several groups of orcas arrived into the area early yesterday morning and spending time at the rubbing beaches later in the day, they were not present when we were out this morning.

Our passengers enjoyed a fabulous tour as the marine wildlife sightings did not disappoint. Everyone was thrilled to observe six+ humpback whales foraging with four of them steadily feeding in one area, one of them was tail and pectoral slapping earnestly. That kind of viewing is spectacular to watch at any time but especially so for those who have never witnessed a humpback whale before where its huge tail and/or pectoral fin is lifted high above the water. What follows, is the fin or tail hitting the water with a force and sound that is phenomenal.

There were four Black-tailed deer seen today amongst the islands including fawns with their white spots still clearly visible. It was fascinating watching whilst they maneuvered their bodies confidently up onto boulders, down onto rocky shorelines and swimming in the water when crossing between neighbouring islands. It was a special treat to sit and view them from a distance while they made their way to safety.

Other marine life seen today were: Harbour seals, mothers and their pups hauled out and resting, Dall's porpoises, Bald eagles, Oystercatchers, Common Murres, Pigeon guillemots and Rhinoceros auklets.

It certainly feels great to be back on the water, welcoming our local guests who are adventuring in their own back yards.
