An Abundance of Wildlife
A light northwest wind kept the fog completely away for the entire day. Even as we set out from Alert Bay, passing the local fishermen and fisherwomen, who were casting out from the government dock, the ocean sparkled beneath a bright blue sky.
Today we had an abundance of wildlife that revealed themselves generously. It was a treat to observe a Northern resident pod that traveled in two distinct groups in a westerly direction in Johnstone Strait. As we first stopped to view them we lowered our underwater microphone and their vocalisations were broadcasted giving us a privileged insight in to their lives underwater.
The Humpback whales we viewed in a different location displayed the power of their flukes as one individual swung its tail and slapped hard on the ocean surface. Perhaps it was stunning fish or removing skin to rid themselves of lice. Maybe it was a means to communicate to other whales; the mysteries keep us wondering and in search of the answers.
The Eagles nest we have been watching for the last two weeks had some activity in it today. Two parents were active right in the middle of the nest so perhaps there are chicks there after all. Seals and sea lions were observed, as well as our local summer birds such as Pigeon Guillemots and Rhinoceros Auklets.
Our guests feasted on the natural wonders of this Northern Vancouver Island region and were blessed with ideal weather as they enjoyed an adventure on board our vessel Seasmoke.
