Speechless and Smiling - What a Day!

Both afternoon and evening passengers were so thrilled with everything they saw, some were rendered speechless while others just couldn’t stop smiling! The MV Seasmoke left the Alert Bay dock in the afternoon under overcast skies with a light southeast wind. In the Stephanson Islands guests enjoyed seeing Harbour seals, then venturing out to Egeria Shoal were excited to catch sight of transient Orca, otherwise known as Bigg’s (T905) that unlike the resident Orca who feed on fish, hunt for other sea mammals.

Just off Stubb’s Island, a Humpback whale came into view, slowing swimming along making shallow dives and foraging. On the evening tour more Humpbacks were seen in Blackfish Sound, and delighted passengers, showing off their huge flukes as they took that last deep dive.

The sprightly black and white Dall’s porpoise were seen both afternoon and evening, bobbing along in the water in the region of Weynton Passage, along with waterfowl such as the Rhinoceros Auklet, Black Oystercatcher and Common Murre. In the afternoon, a mother eagle was seen in the large eagle’s nest in the Plumper Islands, then evening passengers thoroughly enjoyed watching as a brown juvenile attempted to fly, flapping its wings and practising for that first take off out of the nest and into the sky.

There were many comments today about the magic and beauty of this part of the world, and the ever-changing sky and scenery that is truly breathtaking and special.
