A Humpback Breach Makes for Exciting Day!
Our morning skies were misty and when the MV Seasmoke left the dock from Alert Bay at noon, it was cool. Soon, the sun came out and cleared the mist away and our passengers cruised on calm waters. Those lively seabirds that were out yesterday afternoon, the Sooty Shearwater, were back again searching for tiny fish. The Common Murre, Pigeon Guillemot and Red Necked Phalarope joined in to bask in the sun and swim in Blackfish Sound where the action was taking place today. In the Plumper group of Islands a Bald eagle was spotted high up in its nest.
Our guests observed four Humpbacks in Blackfish Sound near Donegal Point and were immensely delighted to see one of them jump clear out of the water in a magnificent breach! What power in that huge mammal! We credit Brian Norton with the amazing photo he took of this event. Dall’s porpoise were spotted flitting through the water also in the Sound.
Stellar sea lions were visiting the pretty Plumper Islands today as were the spotted Harbour seals, that frequent these rocky islets that abound with graceful, flowing bull kelp.’
Another Evening With the Whales tour left the dock at 4:00pm today and guests dined on a nice meal provided by the local Pass’yn Thyme restaurant and left with nice calm waters under a slight breeze. Stellar sea lions and Harbour seals were still sighted in the Plumper Islands, and Dall’s porpoise were bouncing around in Blackfish Sound.
Our evening tour participants saw about seven Humpback whales off Stubbs Island where they were foraging for food. A great day on the water, all day!
