Wonderful Day on the Water
The MV Seasmoke left under threatening skies, with a bit of wind blowing from the southeast, but fortunately the weather held for today’s afternoon tour and everyone had a wonderful time!
One of the highlights of the tour was watching a couple of Dall’s porpoise harass a large Humpback whale as it was foraging for good in Weynton Bay. Real life drama played out in the open waters in front of our guests! Three Humpbacks were sighted in the Bay, diving their shallow dives as they searched for small krill and fish that they fill up on before leaving the area for their journey south.
Northern Resident Orca were once again spotted in Johnstone Strait - identified as the ‘I’ pod. They appeared to be headed into Robson Bight, a now protected marine area with a phenomenon known as the ‘rubbing beach’ where Orca come to rub up against the rocks. Stellar sea lions were lounging on their favourite Sea Lion Rock, and Harbour seals were also on the rocks in the pretty Plumper Islands.
Guests were pleased to see two pairs of Bald eagles, likely mates both in the Plumpers, and waterbirds such as the Rhinoceros Auket, Red Necked Phalarope and Common Murre were swimming about in Johnstone Strait and Weynton Bay where the Humpback were feeding. Our passengers felt it was a treat to be out on the water and to see so much wildlife at the same time in such close proximity. This helps us all appreciate the true riches of nature right at tour doorstep!
