Calm, Beautiful Day for Whale Watching

Saturday’s stormy seas gave way to calm waters and lovely sunshine for this Sunday’s tour. The Seasmoke, after leaving Alert Bay and picking up passengers at Alder Bay Resort dock headed over to Blackfish Sound where all the action was today. Here our skipper found four Humpback whales near Orcalab, diving and foraging as they hunted for food. Passengers always enjoy the sight of their enormous flukes as they make that final dive.

Also near Orcalab Dall’s porpoise were flitting about in the water - surfacing quickly, then back down again. These little ‘black and whites’ are speedy swimmers, often going up to 55km per hour.

Stellar sea lions were also favouring Blackfish Sound and were seen swimming around, and numbers of them were observed on Sea Lion Rock and in the Plumper Islands.

It was a great day for birds with Bald eagles perched up high on trees in the Stephanson set of islets, Cormorants spotted near Orcalab, , and Cassin’s Auklet, the Rhinoceros Auklet, Red Necked Phalarope and Sooty Shearwater all present in Weynton Passage.

Guests were grateful for the beautiful weather and the opportunity to see so much sea life all in one place.
