Nice Day
Not too long after morning tea was served aboard SV Tuan we came across a huge Humpback whale. This individual is locally known as Stripe or BCZ0004. We had a great look at his great big white tail a few times before his deep dives. The strait was quite calm and his breath lingered in the air giving away his presence after he had dove. We continued onwards, came across a few Dall’s porpoises including a very small calf that was swimming right next to its mother. On the way back we came across Stripe again and more Dall’s porpoise that couldn’t resist coming over to play with the boat. There is nothing quite like looking down into the water and seeing the striking black and white markings of the porpoises as they dart back and forth under the bow. Other species seen were Common Murres, Marbled Murrelets, Rhinoceros Auklets, 1 Cassin’s Auklet, 1 Belted Kingfisher, 1 White-winged Scoter, Surf Scoters, 1 Rufous Hummingbird, Bald Eagles, and Red-necked Phalaropes.
