All Creatures Great and Small Feasted Upon the Sea
We had a full day on the water running two tours and it was incredible to see the variety of wildlife coming and going, feasting and foraging.
On the first tour Orcas were sighted not long after departing from Alder Bay having just picked up our final guests. They were following salmon that were making their way right into Beaver Cove which is just West of Telegraph Cove. It was the A42's and the youngest in this pod was seen tail slapping and playing like juveniles do. Once out of the cove they continued heading East and never really slowed down and so, the afternoon tour they were well out of our reach.
In the afternoon it was all about the feeding frenzy made up of numerous Gulls, Auklets, Common Murres and more. Our two species of porpoise and the gentle giant Humpback whales were feeding on a tight ball of fish that pulsed in and around the seas near our boat.
It was mesmerizing to watch the jaw of this 45+ foot animal rise to the surface and take in a mouthful of juvenile herring. A single Sea lion was also seen amongst the feast which symbolized how may animals are relying on this one particular food source.
The wind and seas remained calm, the clouds kept the scorching sun at bay and our passengers were thrilled by what they experienced in the delightful backyard of Cormorant Island.
