Marine Mammals amongst the Mist
Our sightings: Humpback whales, Stellar sea lions, Harbour seals, Dall's Porpoises, Bald Eagles and two Eaglets in their nest, Rhinoceros Auklets, Common Murres, Ancient Murrelets, Pigeon Guillemots, Belted Kingfishers and Gull Species.
The fog was in our surroundings when we first headed out this morning. It was mostly mist that enabled us to see and enjoy a variety of marine species, and by late morning, the sun was warm and yielding gorgeous visuals of numerous green islets, sparkling kelp forests, a blue ocean and sky that continued to showcase, throughout the afternoon!
It was a Humpback Whale day with sightings on both tours; of particular interest on the afternoon tour, we enjoyed viewing a mother and her calf.
The two Bald Eaglets were sitting high up on the edge of their nest and were also seen to be moving about so it will not be long before they are ready to fledge. There were increasing numbers of seabirds observed, and while we watched a Stellar Sea Lion catching a large salmon, a Humpback whale foraged nearby. There was always something exciting to see!
As more food moves into the area in the coming days and weeks, so too will increasing numbers of marine mammals and seabirds arrive to feed. It is an exciting time to be on the water and experience all that there is to see in this most beautiful place on earth!
